Hunt Story

The wind was blowing a bit so I decided not to hunt from a ladder stand, and instead hunted from a ground blind looking at a food plot between mature pines. Squirrels and turkey were active and making a lot of noise, but no deer movement was seen. I got to the stand a bit late at about 7:30, and I wondered if I was too late. At 8:12 I heard a shot and thought I might be ok. Less than fifteen minutes later I saw two deer through some young oak scrub. One moved towards me and I saw antlers. He kept moving slowly towards me, improving my shot. When he was within fifteen yards of me, he turned broadside and gave me a neck shot. Last season we didn't get a shot, so even though I have been hunting for thirty years, I was excited to see a mature buck on only my second time hunting this season. I pulled the trigger and he went straight down. After a prayer of thanks to God, I got up and went to him. He turned out to be heavier than I anticipated, weighing in at 195 pounds on the processor's scales.
