Hunt Story

On Sunday, Nov. 5, I was hunting on a private farm in Macon County. I had spooked several deer going to my stand before daylight but had not seen anything up until 10:30 a.m. Squirrels barked all morning in a thick hollow behind my ladder stand. I had just the week before found several scrapes and a line of large fresh rubs and positioned my ladder close-by. At 10:30 a.m., I decided to try my Primos Original Can Estrous Bleat. I turned it over two times about 20 seconds apart. As I was putting my call back in my pocket, I heard a deer trotting up the ridge directly behind me. When the deer came directly under my ladder (within 1 or 2 feet), I looked down and saw the buck and his very tall, chocolate rack. The buck apparently smelled me and took off running directly away from me through the hardwoods. I threw up my custom-built 7mm-08 and found the buck in my Zeiss scope, aimed for the back of his neck so as not to shoot him in the butt. At the crack of the rifle, my buck turned a somersault, hit at the base of his skull. A great trophy with no meet lost.
