Hunt Story

We got to the stand at approximately 4:00. It might have been about 15 minutes before there were three does that came out and began feeding on the food plot. Shortly afterwards there was a small spike and a descent sized 6-point came onto the plot. The 6-point half heartily went after one of the does, but she was not having anything to do with him. They kept feeding and by the time 5:00 or so rolled around we had seven does on the plot and the same spike and 6-point. A few of the deer kept staring back to the woods and after a few minutes out stepped another doe, followed by the 9-point. They were approximately 120 yards away when they entered the field. That doe trotted our way while the 9-point worked a scrape on the edge of the plot. The doe was probably 50 yards from our stand when the 9-point started after her again. The doe ran off into some pines off to our right. The 9-point did not follow, he turned around and headed back across the plot in the direction of group of does. Reese lifted the rifle, shaking like a leaf in a wind storm, managed to get his breathing right with 4 or 5 breaths and squeezed the trigger. Perfect shot placement at 60 yards. The 9-point ran about 30 yards and gave up the ghost. It was his first deer and a 9-pointer on top of that! He was ecstatic and the smile on his face in the photo is as genuine as it gets.
