Hunt Story
It was a cold evening as I was sitting in my stand facing a food plot with a waterway to my right. It was getting dark, and I was beginning to think I was not going to have a successful hunt as there was only about 10 minutes of shooting light left. Through the twilight, I could see a buck making a scrape next to the young planted pines to the right of the food plot, and I felt the first thuds of excitement as my heart began to race. I thought to myself, “This one is what I have been waiting for.” As the buck stepped out from the cover of the planted pines, I found him in my scope. He walked across the opening, and I followed him through the field with my sight and waited for the perfect shot. My dad made a quick grunt on his call and it gave me just the opening I needed to take my shot as the buck stopped to listen and I slowly pulled on the trigger, but I had not taken the safety off and missed the window to drop him! I quickly thumbed down the safety and repositioned myself to take the shot, but he had already started moving towards the pines. There was barely any time left before I lost him in the woods and my dad grunted one more time to get the buck to stop just before he was out of sight and I took the chance of quickly pulling the trigger back, I felt the rifle fire and hoped my aim was true. I looked up and saw the buck running off, it only took him about forty yards of running before he had enough and I was able to claim my prize.
