Hunt Story

Been watching this boy on game camera on & off this summer mostly evenings. Stopped seeing him regularly end of Aug. Found a cooler afternoon (<85) and sat over a couple of pear trees in a simple/natural 3-sided ground depression. After 1.5 hours saw a deer slowly feeding the edge wood line behind me at 80 yards. Without my binos, I wasn't sure that it was him. As he fed slowly toward me, at 50 yards I knew it was him. I slowly picked up my bow from the ground beside my and loaded an arrow. The buck was feeding at a quarter toward me, and I was partly shaded by a few tufts of grass. At 35 yards he stopped and looked alertly to my left...at another deer. Then looked at me, and back and forth to other deer while I held bow at 3/4 position. As he slowly raised his one rear leg as if to stomp, I knew our time together was short. He glanced back to deer and then away from me, I slowly raised my crossbow to the off-hand position and let the arrow fly. The buck wheeled away as the sound of "thunk" reached my ears. I knew it was a solid hit. Seeing the buck hauling tail back to the corner of wood line from where he probably came. I awaited 10 minutes and went looking for a blood trail. Nothing was found at shot...no blood...no arrow, dang it! I knew he was hit solid I'd heard the "thunk." After reaching the corner where an old fence was down, 15 yards later, I spied a couple of tracks. Good, headed the right way. Then 15 yards later as it was getting dark my bloody arrow was there laying on the ground, Great! Continuing another 10 yards and there was a white tail and I knew it was him! After my heart slowed down I knew he was my biggest deer and only 2nd bow harvest ever! I paused to give a moment of thanks for my great day and the bountiful harvest! Now to get him to the processor and something wild for the freezer this year.
