Hunt Story

With a washout for Wilson's soccer, we decided to go to the woods. We had 13 turkeys feeding in the food plot when a doe stepped out to feed. She fed for about 5 minutes and had walked 75 yards out in the field when Wilson's 8-pointer stepped out 170 yards away. When 9-year-old Wilson first saw the buck, he looked at him in the binoculars and said, "He's a little too small." I told him we'd do whatever he wanted to do, this was his hunt. Wilson then said, "Well, if he gets close enough, I might shoot him." After the buck ate for 5-6 minutes, he decided to follow the doe in the direction she had fed towards. She had fed across the field towards two other does that were 75 yards from us. As the three does fed together, the buck made his way towards them. I told Wilson this was about to get interesting. The buck spent about 2 minutes nosing the does around. The whole time, Wilson had his rifle up on him practicing his shot. When the buck went back to feeding, he was 100 yards away. As the buck fed, Wilson waited for a broadside shot. When the time was right, Wilson squeezed the trigger, the buck broke down in the front, spun, and headed into the edge of the field. After 20 minutes of waiting, Wilson and his proud daddy were holding some antlers just 30 yards away from where the buck was standing when he was shot!
