Hunt Story
This has been the slowest year for myself and my hunting partners in about 10 years. But you can't kill one sitting on the couch, so, with my wife complaining about not enough ground deer meat to get through the next year, I went to stand about 3:45 p.m. Very windy to begin with, but it became more tolerant a little after 5:00 p.m. Simply no movement, but I continued to diligently scan the woods as far as I could see. At approx. 5:15 p.m. as I looked to the west, I saw a flicker that I knew was a whitetail's deer tail. I immediately pulled binoculars up and could see legs of a deer. The deer is just over 200 yards, coming from a pine thicket bedding area into a hardwood bottom. As I continue to search for the deer's head, he walked another 30 yards to the north and I finally saw it was one of the 3 bucks I had targeted before season started. As I began to search for him through my Leupold 3.5x10x50, he walked another 50 yards to the north into an open part of the hardwood bottom just loaded with large acorns. Still over 200 yards, I found an opening and estimated he was 250 yards. Held it on the spine and squeezed on off. The deer hit the ground and fell back behind a tree. As the distance was only 210, my bullet did not drop and it broke his spine. I could see the legs through the scope and he appeared to be down. I put the gun down and went to the binoculars. At first I could not find him, as he was trying to get up and had moved more behind the tree. Another few seconds and he moved enough I could see about half of his neck and head. He was on his knees when I sent another down range from my BAR. The shot was 2" right and 2" high, but hit him in the head and dispatched him for good. Looking forward to getting the bow back out for rest of year and adding to the freezer.
