Hunt Story

I work third shift, and I knew the bucks were moving so I was hunting after work. I was getting in my Summit climbing stand by 8 a.m. I was wearing my HSS harness, and after getting secured in I saw little action and was using my grunt call every 20 minutes or so and watching a thicket. I knew I needed to get down by 10 to get some sleep. After looking around I stood up and put my rifle over my head. I usually let it down with a cord but I didn’t. As I was taking the HSS strap off I caught movement to my left. I slowly turned to look. I knew when I saw the giant body and heavy mass this was a buck I was hunting. As he walked behind a tree I moved my rifle over my head and got ready for the shot when he cleared some brush. When he was broadside, I shot and he went down in his tracks — 40 yard shot no tracking. I called my wife and got my pioneer, it was all I could do to load him on the hitch carrier.
