Hunt Story
I had trail-cam pictures of this buck through the year. He became nocturnal during archery season. I figured that I would eventually kill him chasing a doe during the rut. Several times during the season he would go missing for a week or longer but always came back. Finally on the morning of Jan. 2 I got him on trail camera visiting the feeder at 9 a.m. I decided that while I knew he was in the area, I would hunt him every time that the wind was in my favor. The following afternoon, I checked the wind and headed to the tree. After I had been there a while, I saw a deer headed out of the brush, going toward the feeder and I immediately recognized him as “Brutus” the deer that I was targeting. I waited nervously for a shot. When I finally squeezed off a shot, he ran and I began to question whether I had gotten him or not. I climbed down and found no blood. I tracked pushed over briars and broken brush for about 30 to 40 yards and finally saw him laying in the weeds in front of me. The bullet hadn’t passed all the way through, which is why I had no blood trail.
