Hunt Story

My father and I were watching the rain to see what it was going to do as it was the last day I would be able to hunt before going back to college the next morning. Once it slacked off we headed out and sat down in our homemade stand at about 4:15 pm. The stand sits at the end of a bottom which leads into a woodline and is flanked by two pecan orchards. We had a few showers come through every 20 minutes or so. The wind started to pick up about 5:15 and not long after a few does and a young forkhorn came out, with the fork horn running around chasing the does in the orchard to our left. My father and I continued to watch the deer run around as the fork chased the does and we kept scanning and checking to see what else might come out. After about 10-15 minutes I caught something out of the corner of my eye in the bottom and checked with my binos. As soon as I got a look through them I knew it was a shooter buck so I whispered to my father to my right that there was a good buck and started to pick my rifle up. The buck was walking out of the bottom almost right at us at about 120 yards with his head straight up in the air. By the time I got my rifle up, he had turned right to go up the hill towards the other deer, giving me a clear shot and once he stopped I took it. He fell right where he stood and we waited for about 5-10 minutes before walking up to him, my father and I shaking with excitement as we got closer. A fantastic hunt with my father to cap off my last day of deer hunting for the season and a memory I will always keep.
