Hunt Story

It was much cooler with a low 31 degrees last night. I was hunting a narrow strip of gum and hardwoods, surrounded on each side with planted pines, on our Johnson county farm. With my bow on the pull rope and using my Equalizer climber, I moved up the tree about 20 feet. The big 6-pointer came in about ten till eight, nose to the ground. He had not been seen on camera before. He was not moving toward the area with the corn. He passed by on my left, and I prepared to shoot him in the next opening between trees. He stopped behind a tree and some vines, smelling something he did not like. ME. He stood still for 1 to 2 minutes, while I waited without a shot. When he moved, it was to reverse his direction, and I opted to take the shot. The arrow was back, so I waited 1 and 1/2 hours before calling for a tracking dog. Neil Smith of Toombsboro came in with his dog mid afternoon. The dog picked up the trail and found the deer around 3:30 AM.
