Hunt Story

I was hunting where a clearcut, hardwoods and planted pine come together. I put out some doe estrous on some scent wicks. I was in a ground blind. Shortly after I got settled in I saw a small eight in the hardwoods with his nose to the air. He didn't see a doe so he kind of eased off. I knew this was a good sign. I kept hearing something behind me in the clearcut. It was too loud to be squirrels. I saw the tops of small trees moving. I looked through the binoculars and saw him rubbing trees. I was turned the wrong way. I saw him heading toward the hardwoods coming toward me fast. I quickly swung around. He was already about 60 yards! He stopped and looked straight at me — I thought that's it he got me. He scent checked, paused a second or two to think and then kept coming. He stepped into the firebreak at no more than 40 yards. I put it behind the shoulder and fired. He ran no more than 50 yards and piled up. I was pretty stoked something about being that close at eye level I guess. What a Rush!
