Hunt Story

This is a deer that we named "96" four years ago. We were getting a lot of trail cam pictures of this deer when he was young and he had 9 points on one side and 6 on the other. The first couple of years we didn't even hunt this deer because we knew he could be special. Last year we believed that he was at least a 5 1/2 year old deer. We were lucky enough to get a trail cam video of him early season 2017 and he was a beast. We knew he was around, but no one seen him or got pictures until December. His rack was broken up from fighting, and we decided not to kill him if given the opportunity. The summer of 2018 was going to be special. Our farmer had planted the field in his core area in peanuts, the number one summer attractant!! In July, as the peanuts begin to mature, we began seeing a lot of deer feeding in the late afternoon, and "96" was one of the bucks that was visiting on a regular basis. We would sit and watch the field and try and plan his routes. On Friday afternoon, September 7, 2018, I made a decision to hang my stand 300-yards from the field on a good trail leading to his bedding area. I arrived at this stand site on opening morning greeted by high humidity and heavy fog. Five minutes after daylight, I saw a small 4-point browsing 40-yards from the stand. The small 4-point suddenly was staring down the trail towards the field. I watched in that direction and suddenly saw "96" walking straight toward me. I knew I couldn't focus on the rack, so I looked back at the 4-point to calm my nerves. "96" was focused on the smaller buck also, and that gave me the opportunity to make the shot at ten yards. After calling family and friends, we gave him plenty of time and recovered him after only tracking him 200 yards. A day I will never forget!!!
