Hunt Story

We've watched this deer for the last 3 years - since he was a 2-year-old in the 2018 season. He's always had a split or extra brow tine on a side and thus was known as Split Brow. Even as a 2-year-old, he's always seemed to be a very wary deer and one that never really moved much in the daylight — particularly in open areas and food plots. He was also always about average size for his age but this year, at 5 years old, he made a considerable jump in antler growth and we were all very excited to get the first photos of him this summer since the guys who hunt my farm with me as well as the majority of my neighbors have made a common pact to not take any bucks until at least age 5. I've hunted him exclusively this season when I wasn't taking my son or girlfriend and trying to get them on a mature buck. I had only caught a single glimpse of him but he didn't give me an ethical shot so had to let him pass. In studying his tendencies and patterns, I had noticed that he had similar patterns over the past two years as to where he would be during particular dates so I focused my attention to an area he was in last November and waited for the optimal wind direction for the approach and hunt. I finally got the perfect conditions on Monday morning, Nov 15th so followed the plan and was fortunate enough to intercept him on a trail as he followed about 3 minutes behind a doe. At 230 pounds, he's a solid deer and grosses in the low 150s. I again want to say thank you to all of my fellow hunters and like-minded neighbors for continuing to stay the course on our collective management plan and letting this deer walk multiple times through the years to get him on that common trail with me this week. He's a buck that we should all be proud of as we definitely all had a hand in his harvest.
