Hunt Story

Got to the stand around 4:00 that afternoon. Around 5:20 had a big 8-pointer run into the pines about 100 yards away. He stopped behind some brush. I could see his head and rack clearly but couldn't see his vitals. He then ran out of the area. A couple of minutes later I saw the reason he was running as four dogs came into the pines. They turned around and went back the way they had entered. I then started grunting and using my Primos "Great Big Can" to try and get the 8-pointer to come back. That didn't work, but I did get a mature doe and her fawn to come in. They moved through, and I thought I would try one more time to get the 8-pointer's attention. After blowing the grunt call and working the can, I didn't see anything from the direction that the 8-point had left but looked back off of my right shoulder and saw a tall-tined buck on the edge of the pines. I was able to get the gun around and shoot him left handed. My 300 dropped the non-typical 10-pointer where he stood. This area has been a good spot for me as I killed a 170 3/8 net non-typical there last year. GON has his picture in the December issue on page 36.
