Hunt Story
First day of CFL Almo either-sex firearms quota hunt, I hunted halfway down a fresh scrape line from sun up to noon and didn't see any activity. Midday I went further back along scrape line. I climbed a tree on the side of a ridge overlooking a hardwood creek bottom with the rub/scrape line behind me. The winds were 12 mph for several hours until about 5 p.m. the winds died to calm. At about 5:45 the doe came out of the creek bottom at a steady pace. I shot her and she died where she stood. I took a few minutes for things to calm, sent my hunting buddy a text and hit the bleat call a few times. Approximately 15 minutes later I heard steady grunting coming from the direction the doe had come from. The 9-point buck stopped right by the dead doe. I fired and he ran back into the creek bottom. I climbed down and found no blood from the buck at the shot sight. I walked a few yards toward the direction he ran after being shot and heard him trashing. By the time I got to him he was dead. The doe was 8.5 years old and the buck 6.5 years old per the DNR.
