Hunt Story

This season started like the rest. My dad, brother, and myself always keep trail cameras out to see what we have moving through the property. We normally will pick two or three deer out a season to go after and allow everything else to grow another year. This year we had set our targets on one 12-point and a 10-point buck. Both of these deer we have been watching for the past couple of years, and they continue to look better and better each year. We all bow hunt and gun hunt, but up until the beginning of November these deer were able to give us the slip. My brother was picked to hunt the BF Grant WMA for the first rifle hunt and was able to take a very nice 10-point from there. The very next hunt he actually spotted the 10-point but decided to pass on it because he had just taken one about the same size from the BF Grant. I didn’t get to hunt as much as I would like this year due to work and travel. The morning of Dec. 21, 2019 was my first hunt since Thanksgiving. I decided to hunt the field stand this morning because it was misting rain and the wind was about perfect for this stand. I got settled in about 20 minutes before daylight and waited. It was a cool morning in the mid 40s but very comfortable to hunt. I saw a deer right at daylight but only for a sec and really couldn’t tell what it was. This gave me hope that they were moving and that this could be the day. Around 8:20 a.m. I caught a glimpse of something out the corner of my eye, and when I turned to my right I knew that was the buck I was looking for. I got in position. He was about 180 yards out and I was able to make a great shot on the buck. I knew the way he left the field that he wasn’t going far. I got down from the stand and started tracking him. He only went about 70 yards and expired. I then called my brother and dad and gave them the news. They were both really excited for me, and my dad told me that my mom had bought me and my brother a subscription to the GON for Christmas a few weeks earlier. My dad has been a member for as long as I can remember, and I guess he got tired of me or my brother running off with his magazine each month. I was excited about this Christmas gift cause I love reading the GON, it was just very unexpected. Thank you for this opportunity to look at my deer.
