Hunt Story

Snuck off from work. Had some grunting and chasing early. Two does were trying to sneak through and had a nice 3 1/2-year-old 10-pointer easing in behind them. I thought for a minute about taking him, but he just wasn’t the age class deer we try to take, so I took a video of him instead. Sixty seconds later, the big deer came out, and I didn’t need to study him long. I got drawn on him at 50 yards but had no clear shot. As he was easing off, I knew I had to try something. I grunted at him twice and he didn’t like that. He started tearing up a tree, so I grabbed my horns and lightly rattled a bit. He committed after that and I dropped an arrow in at 45 yards. I felt like the shot may have been a little back, but I followed great blood for 300 yards. I decided it was likely liver, so I backed out and called Chad Yoder to bring in Fuzz. We followed blood across a dirt road and found a bed in some thick pines. Fuzz did his job and we found him behind an old pond 6/10th of a mile from the shot. We had just gotten pictures of this deer for the first time the week prior. Turns out that a neighbor had pics of him as well. I know how he feels, because Mary Margaret got my #1 buck the week before. I’m happy for the both of us!
