Hunt Story
This morning I closed the chapter on a buck we called “Tall Brow.” I have had 4 years of trail camera photos of this buck, starting at 3.5 years old. I could tell he had great potential when he got to 4.5, we decided to give him a pass when he was 5.5. Going into this year, he was my number 1 target buck and I spent countless hours trying to figure out his movements. I watched him throughout the summer in a peanut field with several other bucks. Finally on the second day of rifle season, I got my opportunity. Unfortunately, as soon as I squeezed the trigger he turned away and I knew I didn’t make a great shot. I went to where he was when I shot and found no sign of a hit. As the days went by, with no sign of him on my cameras, I assumed he was dead. Every morning, I would wake up at 5:30 and check my phone to see if he had shown back up. Finally, just a few days ago, he showed back up in the middle of the night. I could tell he had lost 50 or so pounds since the first encounter, and could tell that I hit him in shoulder and it grazed his neck. Knowing that he was probably not traveling far, the hunt was back on. This morning around 7:50, he made a fatal mistake only 30-40 yards away from where I had my opportunity in October. Now it’s time to find the next one.
