Hunt Story
We’re not very creative with our deer names, but we called this one “Dad’s Buck.” I reckon we shoulda called him sneaky. We watched this buck on camera last year as a 4.5 year old and decided not to hunt him in hopes he would squeak by and make it to 5.5. He did, and he blew up. Bow season is a busy time on the farm so we didn’t get to hunt him. In November, dad started hunting him hard, mainly in the mornings before going to work. He would alternate between two stands. If dad was in one, the buck would show up at the other. After countless hunts they never managed to cross paths. We really wanted dad to get the big guy, but after a while he told my brother and I to hunt him some because he said it must’ve been “meant to be for someone else to get him.” On Wednesday evening, dad hunted the food plot before church. As luck would have it, the buck was at his other stand at 4:30. So on Thursday, dad went to where the buck had been the day before and I went to the food plot. After hearing a fight and snort wheeze, he stepped out in the food plot. I immediately knew who he was. I put my gun back down because I wanted my dad to get him more than I wanted to. After all he does for us and others, he is the one who deserves a buck like this. In my head I could hear him saying, “Well son, it must be meant to be.” As the buck started to leave, I picked up my gun and took the shot. My dad was just as happy for me as if he’d killed it himself. I’m thankful for the opportunity to enjoy God's creation with my family. If you are able to hunt, and have somewhere to do it, Thank God for it. If you have family and friends to enjoy the outdoors with, thank God for them. We are so blessed and we should not take any of it for granted. It all comes from God. Hunting ain’t all about inches, it's about the memories we make and the people we make them with.
