Hunt Story

Got in my stand late (8 am) and stayed to 10 am in very high wind. Was returning to my vehicle down the trail that I entered—I had used a drag rag with scent plus cotton balls in brush on that trail. I saw an undefined "deer" moving slowly in front of me and behind laurels downslope, so I froze and waited for its next move. I thought that it would run off, but it did not. I hit my grunt call a couple of times, after which he stepped out broadside to me at 60 yards. Bang. He leaps, stumbles and runs into a laurel thicket. I did not see any blood or hair on the ground at the impact site but a furious search showed two small drops of blood on some leaves at the thicket. I dropped gear and bushwhacked through the thicket until it opened up on a slope...and there he was graveyard dead against a tree—he bled out inside. He was approximately 100 yards from where shot. That was a brutal half-mile drag off of the mountain, thank goodness downhill with the aid of a cheap kid's plastic snow sled ($12).
