Hunt Story
Rattled lightly around 8:20 am, and about two minutes later I could hear cypress knees and fallen limbs cracking. It didn't sound like running but a steady cruise heading my way. I grabbed my bow and got ready. Crunch here and there, and then I spotted him working in at 35 yards. He was still committed to investigate further, so I waited to see which way he would go. His head up and alert he opted for downwind. I ranged his projected path at 23 yards and decided I was going to take him. I drew back and, all of a sudden, I heard a second deer coming in. Every TV show enthusiasts knows the big boy is in the back, so I let down and waited about 20 seconds for a sight of the second deer. Crackling branches, then out stepped the nicest 4-point I've ever seen. Relocated the 8-point standing right where I left him watching the same thing I was. Drew back, took a breath and let her fly. He bolted away and made like he was circling the runway, jumped over a log the size of a bale of hay and hit the grass. I watched the 4-point walk around for about 10 minutes then quietly packed up and took everything to the truck. I knew the shot was spot on his left shoulder and felt better about seeing him lay down but still wanted to give him some time. When I came back to the arrow, I had my gutting knife and a 32-oz. Gatorade because It's about a 300-yard drag to the bluff through cypress wetland and then a steep 75-foot climb to the road. I think I'm gonna start boating in to my stand, he was only about 30 yards from the river. This is my second best bow buck.
