Hunt Story

Sunday evening, Jan. 10, at 5 p.m., my Aunt Tina and I went to the sand one last time. We had been that morning and didn't see anything, but I was hoping that something would walk out since it was the last day of deer season. I don't like the noise guns make, so my Uncle Brad and Aunt Tina taught me how to shoot a crossbow. We had fixed a spot in the food plot known as the 200 with a ground blind. I hunted that spot all season with no success. I have been hunting with my Uncle Clint too, but no deer in range. Although several deer were seen in that area and one doe was taken the evening before. Aunt Tina and I got in the blind around 5 p.m. About 5:55, a deer stepped out in the far side of the food plot, and it was a buck! We knew it was not in range for the crossbow, so Aunt Tina told me I was gonna have to shoot her gun. I was nervous!! I asked her to hold my ears. Knowing she was not able to do that in the positions we were sitting in, she changed the subject and handed me the gun. She told me to find the kill zone through the scope. I finally got in a position sitting in her lap trying to look through the scope. The gun was too long, and I could not see anything but black. I slid the butt of the gun under my armpit and finally I could see. I said, “I see it now!” Then the deer started walking again. Aunt Tina told me to wait till it stopped again and make sure I was on the kill zone. Finally it stopped. Then I aimed and slowly I pulled the trigger, not knowing what to expect, since I never shot a gun before. I said, "I seen fire!” Then I saw the deer jump up and run in the woods. We walked down to where we saw the deer last but could not find any blood. That made me nervous. We called my Uncle Brad, and he told us not to go into the woods until he got there. A few minutes later he drove up, and I was so excited. I had been on the phone calling mom and dad to tell them I had shot a gun. I showed Uncle Brad which way he ran and began to look for him. At this time it was dark, and we were using flashlights. After a short search, we found the deer, and I was so excited. My first deer (a buck) and my first time shooting a gun!! I have now asked for a gun for my birthday.
