Hunt Story

I started my day at around 5 a.m. that morning. I eased up the ridge where I found some deer sign. I decided to sit there for a while. Around 10 a.m., I had not had any action and decided to move. I had placed a trail camera and dripper in another area and went to check those. I did find that a bear had tried to tear the camera off the tree and had about seven pictures of him there. I decided to remove both of those and traveled up the hollow. As I eased around, I found some more deer sign. It looked promising and I sat there until about 3 p.m. No deer came through, but I did see a coyote. I tried to take him but missed him with my shot. After this disappointment, I decided to head back to the truck. I thought I would take a different route back to the truck and try my luck on an old skid road. Just as I started down the ridge, I walked up on the buck. He heard me coming and stood up in his bed. When I saw him, he was looking at me. It startled me at first. I took another look, back to my right and realized what it was. I carry my rifle cradled in my arms, without a sling. Too many deer have been missed because you are trying to get the gun off your shoulder. I brought my gun up and fired. The deer fell right there.
