Hunt Story
Walked into my food plot at 6:40. Walked halfway down to put out my tarsal gland and estrus. As I was walking back to my stand, I heard a doe blow a few times at what I thought was me. I climbed into my tripod, and as I pulled my gun into my lap, the doe ran out from the end of the food plot coming towards me. She got within 15 yards and turned completely around and went the same direction she came, entering the woods exactly where she had just come out. I had a clearing in thick planted pines to my right and I saw a doe cross the opening. Once I saw her cross a second time, I saw the rack of my buck. He never stepped out in the clearing and never was actually chasing the doe, but he wouldn't let her get out of his sight. He stood in the same spot for about five minutes which seemed like an eternity. All I could see was the back half of his stomach and his back hip. I had to shift around the stand and make a very tough shot at his vitals through pine needles. Luckily enough, I knew I had hit him good by the way he ran off. I got down, went and picked up my dad for reinforcement and started trailing him at about 7:45 after shooting him at 7. We found great blood and followed it about 100 yards straight to him. He was on our camera in August and we hadn't seen him until this hunt. Just another way the rut can bring out the big boys!
