Hunt Story
The week of Thanksgiving has always been a great week of hunting. Since we moved 3 1/2 hours away from our hunting land 10 years ago we spend Thanksgiving Break camping. The land owner always teases my husband and says he can’t go home until I kill a buck! Monday morning I heard grunting and saw a nice buck that never crossed the property line. No matter how much I grunted or bleated he wouldn’t come. There as lots of deer chasing and such but not this side of the fence. That only increased my desire to continue the hunt. Tuesday morning I woke up to rain and the guys said they were not going out. I got dressed, put on my raincoat and went to hunt alone. Within the first hour, a doe jumped the fence and right behind her was a nice buck. I grunted, but it would not stop chasing the doe. A few minutes later a second buck stepped out. My heart started racing so I picked up the gun and shot. I heard it go down just a little bit into the thickets. I could not get the bullet casing to eject. I called my husband and then my son asking for tips to no avail. I was working hard and then a third buck stepped out. It kept looking in my direction but didn’t go as I worked hard to get the bullet unloaded. Finally, I got it. As I pulled up the rifle the buck was just standing there broadside. At this point I had assumed the one I shot had got up and hadn’t made a good shot. I looked through the scope and it was fogged over and I couldn’t get deer in the scope. After I wiped it clean, the buck walked out of view. My husband came to my stand and since it was raining we wouldn’t see any blood. My husband, Jon said we didn’t need a trail because he saw the buck. It wasn’t the biggest one I had seen that morning, but still a nice 8 pointer. A great week to be thankful for a husband and son who enjoys hunting.
