Hunt Story
This particular buck was showing up on trail cam in daylight, so I decided it was time to go after him. After two unsuccessful hunts, he showed up at 7 p.m. on Oct. 6. I watched the buck work three scrapes before he finally gave me a 30-yard broadside shot. My shot was decent, but it was low and a little back. After tracking the buck for 200 yards, my friend Cameron Giddens, my brother Freeman Shepard and I decided to back out and give him some time. We decided to call our buddy Mickey Jarrard and his tracking dog Ruger, and boy am I glad we did! At the end of a 1,000-yard track over very rough terrain, Ruger bayed the buck just after midnight and we were able to finish him off quickly. This is a short story of a very long and action-packed hunt that we will not soon forget!! Thanks again to Mickey and Ruger, and if there is any doubt about your shot placement don’t hesitate to give him a call.
