Hunt Story
With the rut winding down, I elected to hunt near a food source on the afternoon of November 28th. We have a year-round protein feeder stationed on the edge of an agricultural field with young planted pines to the east and mature pines to the south. The mature pines have adequate underbrush where deer are comfortable traveling during daylight hours. The initial hunt was slow, with no movement at all until nearly five o'clock. Around that time, does started funneling in for an evening snack at the protein feeder. Around sunset, several promising 3 1/2-year-old bucks came in to check the does. Just before last light this one-eyed bruiser, who had just shown up on camera a few weeks prior, came in to investigate the action. I was able to slip my arrow just behind his right shoulder on a quartering away shot. The double-lung shot piled up the old buck less than 100 yards away.
