Hunt Story

This was our first trip to Sapelo Island. We were very lucky to have gotten drawn for the adult-child hunt on Oct. 9-11. Our group consisted of six people—my son Cory and I, my brother-in-law Adam and his two sons Andy and Adam Jr., along with my father-in-law Joe. We arrived by ferry at 9 a.m. Friday morning. When we got camp set up, we picked out our spots to hunt for the afternoon. I had some good spots told to me by a good friend that had been hunting the island for 10 years. Me and Cory settled on spot 64 for the afternoon hunt. The wagon headed out at 3:30 p.m. to take us to our spots. When we arrived at spot 64, everything was very thick except for a little cut path that had started to grow back up. The party went on for about 200 yards and then got really thick again. Along the path we found a paw spot about 100 yards in, so we decided to hunt 50 yards away and watch it. We were hunting from a ground blind so the roadway was our only spot that we could see anything. The afternoon was very slow except for one raccoon and a million mosquitos. At about 6:50 p.m., I did a series of grunts, and 10 minutes later the buck walked out. The buck appeared out of nowhere. The buck just stood broadside 40 yards away looking at us, trying to figure out what we were. I told Cory to get on him quick because he may run. Cory quickly raised his single-shot Rossi .243 on some homemade shooting sticks and let the hammer drop. The buck ran stumbling into the bushes and trees. In seconds we heard him crash. We waited for about 15 minutes before picking up the blood trail. The buck only ran about 50 yards and fell dead in the roadway of another path. After some high-fives and prayers, we began dragging the buck toward the road where we would be picked up. When we loaded the buck on the trailer, everyone told us that the buck was a very good trophy for an island deer. The game wardens at camp told me he was also a big trophy, and that they only get about one deer that size every quota hunt. When me and my son heard that, we knew he had a trophy of a lifetime.
