Hunt Story

On November 8th 2019, I went hunting and that morning I saw 8 deer. About 11:45 I heard a deep grunt while I was watching a 4-pointer in my food plot eating. I didn't want to spook the deer, so I elected to not grunt back. At 12:30 I got down and walked back to my truck, ate an apple and took a 2-hour nap. I came back to the same stand and at 3:05 deer started filtering in out of a wet weather pond area into pine/hardwoods. At 3:30 they started eating in my food plot, I was sitting on the other side of the food plot in a box stand in between two white oak trees. I watched the deer feed and walk back for a while. At 5:10 p.m. the deer filtered back into the woods to my left. I then heard that deep grunt once again, I grunted back, this went on for 20 minutes. He wasn't moving and neither was I. I remembered 3 years ago in a similar situation when this happen while I was hunting turkeys, I would call, he would gobble, back n forth, finally I stopped and the gobbler came out. So I quit grunting, he knows where I am at, I said to myself. At 530ish I saw a deer walking through some hardwoods to my right. I could tell it was a mature deer because of his body, his belly was sagging and legs looked short. Without hesitating I went ahead and laid my rifle up for the shot. As the buck was getting closer I got a glimpse of his rack. I quickly took the safety off and when he stepped out he walked 5 yards and stopped and started to eat in my food plot. I pulled the trigger and he dropped where he was standing and didn't even kick. I am very selective with shooting bucks, this was my second time taking my safety off in 5 years.
