Hunt Story

I recently moved back to my childhood home of Augusta, Ga. after finding work with the Augusta Nationals Golf Club. As a veteran without local private land access, I've been putting in time on the army base (Fort Gordon) since September. Recently I had been scouting several hours a day after work in the previous and sitting on assumed fresh sign for 6-8 hours on Saturdays and Sundays. I haven’t harvested a deer in over a decade and was growing concerned over late season public land pressure, so I shifted focus to late season food sources, bedding areas, and fresh sign. After sitting for four hours (after my weekend shift) on Sunday, two 3-ish year old bucks were bumped into my lane on the draw I was hunting. The weather was unseasonable warm, and I wasn’t optimistic I’d get a makable slug shot opportunity. At around 4:00 PM two resettable public land bucks were bumped by something or someone and entered at about 45 yards behind me. I took the smaller buck because he presented broadside and I was getting apprehensive about my lacking luck in the timber to date.
