Hunt Story

I was hunting some family land off of the Ohoopee River. I have hunted the land for four seasons now. I have to get to the island by canoe. I backed-packed a 40-lb. bag of corn (apple scented )and my Summit climbing stand and a axe into a new bottom that I've never hunted before. I found buck sign throughout the area ( scrapes and rubs). It was a good spot, but there were only huge cypress trees in the area. I found a large tree and put my climber on it. I couldn't climb it, so I left it at the base of the tree. I cut a small tree out of the way and poured the corn out. I hunted the stand on the morning of 10-14-2015, and saw several bucks and does. I missed a deer that was bigger than this one. I could have hit it with a rock, but it was a clean miss. I didn't hunt the morning of 10-15-2015, but I did go that evening. I packed several pines limbs in with me to zip-tie to my climber for cover. I made it to my stand and zip-tied the limbs to it. This was probably around 6 p.m. Approximately 6:15 p.m., I was in my stand (no climbing, just at the base of the tree.) I had just settled in when I heard a deer coming, it was a doe. Right behind her was the buck I shot. He was trailing her. They went behind some brush, and several seconds later the buck came out in the bottom. I shot him, and he dropped in his tracks. That is the first time I've shot a deer sitting in a deer stand at the base of a tree, but it worked and I'll keep doing it.
