Hunt Story

This year, I was drawn to participate in the second hunt of the Henry County Water Authority Youth hunt. We had a great hunt. My Dad and I got to our blind about 45 minutes before sunrise. When the sun came up, there already was a small doe feeding in the food plot. We decided not to shoot her and watched her graze for about 30 minutes. At about 30 minutes after sunrise there was a shot from another part of the property, within a few minutes a buck ran behind us and I barely got a look at it. The doe spooked and ran off. At lunch time the water authority guys picked us up and we had lunch, an awesome raffle, and some good association. We got back to the blind about 3:30 p.m. We sat all afternoon but didn't see anything. I was really regretting not taking the doe earlier. It was almost dark and my dad had already started packing up our bags when suddenly the buck busted out of the thick brush and ran across the food plot. He stopped and stood perfectly broadside beside the 40 yard flagging tape the Water Authority crew had put up. My dad asked if I had him, then said, "Shoot em". At the shot he jumped, mule kicked and then ran off down the trail through the woods. It was starting to mist rain, so after a few minutes my dad went over to where the buck had been standing to look for blood. We could not find any blood so we started slowly down the path the buck had ran. Within about 40 yards I saw a strange reflection from my light. As we got closer, we could see that it was the reflection of the buck's eyes. When we started counting I could not believe it. It was a 12-point buck...... My first deer. It was a great day! I was very excited to kill my first deer and I really want to thank everyone at the Henry County Water Authority for putting on such a great event.
