Hunt Story

Like most hunters, I was using the moon phase and the rut map to plan my week of hunting. The week I chose was Oct. 30 through Nov. 5 in Washington County. First day was an evening hunt, and I saw five does and nice 2 1/2 8-point buck. It look like good start to the week. We had one buck on trail camera my nephew Chad named Curly Bill. He is great 9-point 4 1/2 year old buck we all were hunting for. So on the second day of my hunt, I went to my favorite stand, down to beaver swamp. That didn't work out for me, a big hog came in and ran everything out there. Third day I went to power line stand seeing little deer moment. I have a small doe in the food plot, and she came running up to me in the box blind. I look back and I saw a great 3 1/2 year old buck that stopped my heart. I look at him and knew that it was not Curly Bill. No deer moment that evening, so on it's day 4. My nephew Chad is now at the camp, and now there are two hunters after the buck. We have Curly Bill on four different cameras. One in the cut power line and beaver stand, so Chad went to the cut and I went to the power line stand. As the morning came alive, there was one doe in the food plot feeding, and she fed for an hour and then another doe came in. She started feeding. As she moved up the food plot, a buck then came in. I throw up my binoculars, and I could not believe it was the buck we all were hunting, it was Curly Bill! He came my way, oh my God! He was here in front of me. He was following that doe, so he gave a quarter to me shot. I take a breath and let it out slowly! I was rock steady, then I squeeze the trigger. The shot rang out. I hit him and he ran off. My nephew Chad texted me, did you shoot? I said yes I did and it was Curly Bill. Chad said stay in the stand I'll be coming to you. He finally he got there. The shout rang out at 8.20, what kept you? He said it was only 10 minutes. Ya right. When you shoot something big feels like an eternity. So we started to look for sign. It took 10 to 15 minutes to find blood. We decided to back out and went back to camp, we waited and waited. So we went back where we found the blood. I had a blood light my wife gave me, it worked. Sign was hard to find, the first 20 yards was difficult, then it got better and better. Then 60 more yards, I look up and said there he is. My nephew Chad was first to get to him, Chad looked back at me and said you killed Curly Bill!
