Hunt Story
I was sitting in my 10-foot tripod in the middle of a 38-acre section of my hunting club's lease. The wind was calm and the temperature was slightly cooler than the past few days. Right at sunrise I heard what sounded like a deer grunt, but I couldn't tell where it came from. I waited until the sun was up high enough so I could see the whole clearcut I was hunting. About 7:30 a.m. I took out my Primos bleat can and hit the bleat 2 or 3 times. Fifteen minutes later a deer walked into the clearcut headed in my direction at about 175 yards away. I could see horns on its head and quickly picked up my Savage 270 to check to see if it the deer was one I wanted to take. I quickly decided the 9-pointer was nice enough for me to take, and with the deer at 150 yards, I squeezed the trigger and he dropped. After waiting about 15 to 20 minutes and regaining my senses, I decided to get down and check out the nice 9-pointer. As I walked through the clearcut slowly to within 50 yards of my deer, I noticed another busting out of the thicket 25 yards beyond where he laid on the ground. I stopped and scanned the area where the deer came from and noticed another large body, heavy-horned buck walking out of the thicket. He stepped out and I quickly through up my gun and fired a shot. The deer tensed up and just stood there. I quickly rechambered another bullet and shot . The big deer dropped in his tracks. Walking to my first deer I could not believe what just happened. After admiring the nice 9-point, I proceeded to the huge 8-point laying 25 yards away. I could not believe my eyes when I walked up on the 20 3/4-inch spread 8-pointer. My largest buck ever.
