Hunt Story

We had a strange deer season this year. The rut came in for a little while in November and then went away almost immediately due to the warm weather. However, it came back strong right at the end of the season. I started hunting a recently cut soybean field that now had a good stand of clover and rye grass. For three days, I hunted this spot from the ground tucked in a little place in the tree line along the west side of the field. During the first two days, I saw several deer and witnessed amazing activity right at sunset, including bucks grunting, sparring, and chasing does. Even though the chance to take a nice trophy was before me both days, I held off, knowing that these bucks would benefit from another year or two of growth. On the third day, my patience was rewarded. There was less activity on the field compared to the previous two hunts, but close to dark three big bucks came into the field about 150 yards from me. I watched them for a little while as they moved down the hill, closer and closer. Taking a deep breath to quiet my pounding heart, I made a good shot at about 100 yards on the largest one and dropped him immediately. I was so excited! It was a perfect three days of hunting, and I shot my first buck ever!
