Hunt Story

I had seen this deer on the property once, back in 2012. Last year November, 2016, it showed up again, but this time three bucks appeared to be chasing it, and one buck had his nose right on its tail, which I remember thinking was strange. This evening hunt was only the second time that my daughter and I had been able to bow hunt together this season. We decided to hunt together in a two-man ladder stand, watching a field with a mixture of pines and acorn-producing oak trees. I immediately recognized this deer when it stepped out into the field at approximately 7:15 PM. My daughter was also familiar with this deer, since we had several trail-cam pics of it. After a few minutes, it came in close enough for my daughter to get a shot. I watched as she released the arrow and could tell that the shot looked good, as it ran off. This is my daughter's third deer with a bow, but she was just as excited as she was the first time she took one. We waited approximately 30 minutes, and after a short blood trail of about 80 yards, we found the deer. After observing the crazy looking rack that was still in full velvet, I noticed that the deer appeared to have female parts, but no testicles. Weird! I contacted DNR and they advised that some of these "Does with Antlers" will still have an estrous cycle, which explains why those bucks were chasing it last Fall. They also advised that I would need to report the harvest as an antlered deer. They said that's one of the reasons they changed the wording on the harvest record from "Buck" and "Doe" to "Antlered Deer" and "Antlerless Deer."
