Hunt Story

My husband headed out mid-day to put out some corn and walked in on a good buck. He came home saying, "This afternoon will be a good day to hunt...the deer are moving." My husband and I usually hunt separately, however he wasn't feeling well and decided to come with me for the afternoon. I think he was secretly trying to take notes on how to shoot a GOOD buck 🙂 We got in the woods around 5 pm, and the weather was just right (there was a slight cool front that had settled in). The hunt was pretty uneventful. I couldn't believe we had not seen any deer, and I was starting to get discouraged WHEN I saw movement in the woods about 75 yards away. The buck was crossing behind some palmettos, and I saw his white rack and knew IMMEDIATELY he was a shooter (especially for this area, Saint Simons Island). I got my bow up as I watched him come in. In the meantime a small buck had come in (that I was not aware of) 20 yards in front of me. My husband whispered to me to be careful with my movement as there was another deer right in front of me. The 8-point came in pretty quickly but then stood (for what seemed like FOREVER) behind some palmettos about 20 yards in front of me. He began to eat, and I could see him but did not have a shot because he was behind some brush. I sat "ready" for about 10 minutes just waiting for him to come out just a little bit more so I would have a clear shot. I was trying to re position (because every part of my body was getting numb) and my sling hit the side of the stand. He got spooked, and I knew it was either take a not-so-clear shot (and hope for the best) or risk him running off before I could shoot. My husband knew it also. I heard him whisper "you better shoot before he runs." I put the 20-yard pin on him and shot hoping for the best. I knew immediately it was a good hit. The deer only ran about 30 yards. He was an easy recovery. This is one of many GREAT hunting memories I am so thankful to have shared with my husband. He says he is my good luck charm....and I am beginning to think he may be right! 🙂
