Hunt Story

The property I rented last year is small, but the landowner had cut half the timber off the property and the deer seemed pressured. So this year I cleaned up and planted a small food plot. In front of the property is a small section of hardwoods and a 10-year-old pine stand that meet together. There are a few red oaks mixed with some pin oaks, so I figured the deer were eating the red oaks. I saw the buck twice before I actually started hunting. He was up in front of the property both times. He ran back into the woods where I had my ladder stand each time. So the day I took the buck, the wind was perfect, and around 6:45 p.m. he came from where the hardwoods meet the pines. He came straight to the red oak acorn tree, which was about 25 yards from my stand. I waited a few minutes until he gave me a broadside shot with my .50 caliber smoke pole, and I hit him behind the left front shoulder. He ran about 20 yards, and it was done.
