Hunt Story

We have at least a 8-year history with this buck. Last year the buck was hit by a car and supported a crazy 17-point non-typical rack. He couldn’t even put any weight on one of his legs last year, and he would never show up in daylight. We feared that he wouldn’t make it much longer with the injury. We started getting pictures of a giant deer this summer, and my gut was telling me it was the injured deer and that he had survived. It was difficult to tell since the rack was totally different, but we knew it was a old buck. On Nov. 17 I was sitting at work at the fire station, and my cell cameras starting blowing up. I couldn’t believe what I saw when I checked it. The giant buck was out in broad daylight. He popped up several times in daylight on several cameras. This was one of the very few times in eight years that this buck showed up in daylight during hunting season, and I was trapped at work for 24 hours. I had all my hunting gear in the truck and planned on leaving work at 7:00 the next morning and going straight to the spot he showed up in daylight. Right as I was leaving work the next morning, my cell cam sent a picture through at 7:03 and it was him again out in daylight. I headed to the property that was 20 minutes away and slowly worked my way to the closest stand on the property. I got up in the stand and was quietly removing the pile of leaves that had built up in it. I looked up and saw a doe, and right behind her was the giant buck. I pull my gun up and attempted to shoot but forgot to turn the safety off. He stopped right on the edge of the wood line, and I was able to squeeze a shot off. I called my cousin Chris who has hunted this buck more than anyone and told him to head my way. He arrived about 20 minutes later, and we made our way over to where the buck entered the wood line. We spotted the buck piled up on top of a hill. As we approached the deer, we instantly noticed that the deer had a crazy injury to one of his legs and realized it was the injured buck from last season. Thanks goes out to my cousin Chris for allowing me to pursue this buck with him over the past few years.
