Hunt Story

Jackson and I arrived at our hunting camp at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon prior to opening day of gun season. I was unloading our supplies, and he wanted to go hunting. He had completed his Hunters Safety Course the prior day and this was his first time hunting in a stand without me or his Grandfather with him (he has been hunting for 5+ years and has killed 7 or 8 deer with one of us in the stand, but nothing of any size). I took him to a stand called Spaghetti Junction, approximately 150 yards from our camp. At around 6:45 p.m., Jackson texted me and said a doe was in his lane, "What should I do?" I said, "Wait for the big one." He was watching the doe in his scope (secretly hoping I would give him the thumbs up to shoot the doe), and he noticed movement 20 yards behind the doe. All he saw were horns, the deer was passing through and was not paying attention to the doe or the planted food plot. This all happened in less than 3 seconds, just as the deer was about to cross out of the lane, Jackson adjusted his aim and squeezed the trigger, hitting the buck in the neck and dropping him there. I received at least 10 text messages in less than 20 seconds of him shooting. "BIG ONE" "BUCK" "DOWN" "DEAD" "BOOM!" His Grandfather and I arrived at his stand 1-2 minutes later, and he was jumping up and down. The deer was approximately 80 yards down the lane, and I could see horns from the stand. Needless to say, this kid will be spoiled rotten going forward. Not bad for you first hour and an half in a stand alone.
