Hunt Story
This buck showed up on trail camera about a week and a half ago. I didn’t have any pictures of him throughout the summer and fall. With cool temperatures and signs of the rut picking up, I knew I needed to spend as much time in the stand this weekend as possible in order to get a chance at this deer. Saturday morning was spectacular!! With temps In the low forties and clear skies I was excited to get some time in the stand. I was hunting a hardwood bottom with limited view. But I knew this was the kind of area to see mature deer in the daylight. Even with the great weather and sitting until 11:00 a.m., I didn’t see a deer. Not discouraged I knew I had to get back to the stand that afternoon. Getting back early afternoon it didn’t take long for the woods to come alive. Three mature bucks with some does and yearlings made for an exciting afternoon. Sunday was slightly warmer with rain in the afternoon. I arrived to the stand in the afternoon greeted by a steady light rain. I had a good feeling that if the rain would slack up I would stand a good chance. Thirty minutes before dark I stood up and got my bow ready. The woods were dripping with cool rain as daylight begin to fade. Getting that old gut feeling, I scanned the woods for the slightest movement. I picked him up only 30 yards away and was surprised how close he had gotten without any sound! As he moved cat-like slow, I nervously clipped my release to my string. I had a small opening just past a very large water oak. As he passed behind the water oak, I drew my bow. Waiting what seemed like forever he finally appeared in the opening, but I I could only see his head and neck. I told myself to just hold on! Ever so slowly he moved forward just enough to expose his shoulders, I anchored behind the shoulder and let the RamCat fly. He ran about 60-70 yards and piled up!! Thank you Lord for an awesome hunt!
