Hunt Story
I was hunting my brother's property in Cherokee County for the first time. He has approximately 25 acres of hardwoods on which he has never hunted. This was my third and last sit on a two day hunt. As I was readying myself to end my hunt, I placed the rope clip on my rifle to lower it to the ground. I decided to unscrew my wingnut on my tree stand seat to re-position the seat for my descent. As I unscrewed one of the wingnuts, I heard a loud rustling of leaves 2 o'clock. I first thought it was the squirrels that had been aggressively hunting acorns for a couple of hours. The noise grew much louder as if someone was dragging a log through the woods. I quickly removed the rope clip from my rifle, then observed a doe walking at 12 o'clock at approximately 20 yards. Much of her body was obscured behind a few trees and I could not make a clean shot. She then walked into the clear at about 10 o'clock. I could also hear more rustling of leaves behind her. I made the decision to harvest the doe while she was in full view. I quickly re-chambered another round in my Remington .270 bolt action, and sat for a few seconds. The sound of rustling leaves moved towards me and a large antlered buck approached the downed doe. I placed my shot behind his left shoulder and he ran approximately 40 yards before expiring. Needless to say, I was shaking with excitement and knew this would be the hunt of my life.
