Hunt Story
I was hunting my family land in Waynesboro (Burke County) Thursday morning. I was on a stand in a mix of hardwoods and pines. There was a cleared lane 25 yards wide x 80 yards long. I was at the downwind edge. Just after first light I began seeing deer about 10 yards in the brush at the far end. It looked to be does being chased by a deer I could not see which I assumed was a buck. The stand is facing more to the left than I prefer so I braced my rifle on the front rail and got into a left handed shooting position (I am right handed). I kept the rifle ready with my scope on 10x. At 8:28 I saw 2 does moving left to right through the brush just past the end of the clear strip so I got ready looking through the scope. Soon another deer appeared and he paused in the middle of the clear strip but still about 10 yards in the brush past the end of the strip. Through the scope I could see a tall rack with good mass and several long times. I only had a clear view of the buck's head and neck so I aimed at the middle of his neck and fired. The buck dropped in his tracks, twitched slightly, and then was still. I waited 20 minutes with the rifle still trained on him because you never know about neck shots but he never moved again. I got down and eased over to him and was thrilled at his size. I am having him mounted and he is easily my best buck from Burke County.
