Hunt Story
I was hunting a Hancock County powerline on opening day of rifle season with temperatures in the 60s and clear skies. I got in the tripod around 4:00 P.M. and saw 14 different does between 4 and 6 o'clock and then it really slowed to a halt as far as deer movement. At this point, I had not seen any bucks moving with any of the does that had crossed from right to left on the powerline. Then around 6:40 I heard limbs a breaking about 150 yards to my left but most importantly there were two different deer chasing each other through the pine/hardwood thicket. All of a sudden, a large buck just darted across the powerline from right to left and I grunted with my mouth and fortunately stopped him broadside at 100 yards. I fired the 308 round at the midpoint of the front shoulders and the deer ran 40 yards and crashed, meanwhile the other deer turned and ran back in the thicket breaking limbs during his departure. I believe the dominant buck is still alive and well for another day of hunting which I hope and pray my 17-year-old son Nolan can harvest this year. I am taking my 21-year-old daughter Morgan this coming Saturday to deer hunt with me and my son. She has never harvested a deer which could really create an interesting scenario for next Saturday's hunt. My son may be concerned about what deer stand I put the new hunter in for Saturday's deer hunt.
