DeKalb Buck Solid Truck-Buck Contender

Adam Lomax, of Cumming, is thrilled that he’s got a really good contender for Week 3 in GON’s Truck-Buck contest. His DeKalb County 13-point, typical-framed buck has more than 160 inches of antler.

Just this year Adam received permission to hunt a new piece of land in Dekalb County. He immediately put out trail cameras over corn in a hardwood bottom near a small creek but unfortunately was only seeing small bucks. He kept his hopes up and continued checking his cameras for any sign of a mature buck.

“He actually just showed up on camera out of nowhere about a week before the season, bigger than anything I’ve ever seen,” said Adam.

Adam put out more corn, but over the course of a few days, he only photographed the buck at night.

Although Adam didn’t get to hunt the evening of Sept. 27, the monster buck showed right at sunset. 

“The evening of Sept. 29 I headed to my ground blind about 4:30 p.m.,” said Adam.

Roughly 20 minutes into getting settled, Adam had two does in front of him. He believed this to be a good sign that deer were moving that afternoon.

Forty-five minutes ticked by. As the does started to walk off, they kept looking at something off in the woods that Adam couldn’t see.

“I could hear something walking through the woods, then I spotted him at about 50 yards through my binoculars,” said Adam. “I immediately started to shake with adrenaline. He stood eating acorns at 45 yards for the longest five minutes of my life. Without a clear shot, I waited for him to proceed down the trail.”

The buck finally made his way much closer to Adam, all the way to 15 yards.

“He was just feeding but facing me. Luckily it’s dark inside the blind, so he wasn’t spooky at all,” said Adam.

As the buck started to turn broadside, Adam pulled back on his Mathews V3, but the arrow fell off his rest and came detached from the string. At that point, the buck was staring directly in Adam’s direction.

“I was able to nock another arrow without him seeing me and finally get a shot off,” said Adam.

The bruiser only ran 40 yards before piling up, but the work wasn’t over for Adam yet. 

“I had to drag him about 150 yards by myself, it was all adrenaline,” said Adam. “I’ve been hunting for 20 years and didn’t realize Georgia deer got this big. I called my wife first, she knew I had shot him because I called before it was dark. She was excited and told me that my hunting season should be over with a deer like that.”

The buck is a 13-pointer that is a typical-framed 7X6. It has a 24-inch spread and 165 inches of antler.

Adam is excited about hopefully winning Week 3 of Truck-Buck and making it to the Shoot-Out at the Outdoor Blast in July 2022. We’re sure he’d be thrilled to ride home in a brand-new Chevy from John Megel Chevrolet.
