Truck-Buck 2019-20: Week 10 Winner, Dwayne Griffin
The stories behind the Truck-Buck Contest winners and the bucks that earned them a spot in the Shoot-Out.

Week 10: Dwayne Griffin, 140 5/8 typical
County: Colquitt Date: Nov. 20
Back in 1992, a 30-year-old hunter from Moultrie killed a 150-inch buck in Colquitt County that earned him a truck in the Hilsman Deer Cooler contest, plus a spot in GON’s Truck-Buck Shoot-Out—at that time only the second Truck-Buck Shoot-Out ever.
Dwayne Griffin didn’t win a second truck from GON that year, but he did get a deer rifle for winning Week 8 in the 1992-93 Truck-Buck contest.
“I got a nice welcome-back present to my home state of Georgia,” Dwayne said after he killed another big Colquitt County buck, a 10-pointer during Week 10 of the 2019 season.
Dwayne and his wife moved back to Georgia last year after living in the Midwest for more than 20 years.
“I work for Procter & Gamble, and we basically spent the rest of my life there until we moved back here last year. I still came back and hunted in Georgia all those years, paying out of state license fees, so I’ve been supporting the state! We moved back because our parents are aging, and I’m getting ready to retire in the next few years.”
Dwayne grew up on a farm and has been hunting since he could carry a BB gun. He enjoys hunting dove, duck, quail and deer, and he killed his first turkey this season.
Dwayne said they got a trail-camera picture of last year’s buck in the middle of the night.
“The size of his horns got me hunting just a bit harder than I had been. I spent 10.5 hours in the stand on that Monday and another 8.5 hours on Tuesday. I’d been chasing a deer on this tract for several years now with no luck when we visited, so I knew chances were slim. Hunting pressure is pretty good on these small tracts in Colquitt County, so you kind of have to wait until they make a mistake.
“Anyway, the scrapes and rubs were huge in the area, so I was sticking to this particular stand. Scrapes on the ground were big as a truck hood!
“I got to the family farm just about daylight. I plan it to walk in where I can just barely see, that’s after years of rattling around in the dark and scaring animals off. I got to my old 20-plus-year-old buddy stand and started to climb it, knowing it creaks and squeaks from time to time. I gently turned in the stand, and 175 yards off there was a nice-bodied deer feeding.”
Dwayne said he grabbed his Sake 7mm mag, the same gun he used to kill the 1992 buck, and put him in the same Nikon scope that’s still on the gun.
“He raised his head, and I knew he was a good one. Squeezed the trigger, and my morning hunt was over. All in about 30 seconds in the stand. You never know with deer hunting.
Dwayne’s 10-point buck netted 140 5/8 to win Week 10, which is usually one of the toughest weeks to win with multiple Fab 40 bucks… Like Dwayne said, you never know with deer hunting… or with how the weeks of Truck-Buck will fall.
“It’s been over 20 years since I mounted a sizeable buck, but I just think I might mount this one. Thanks GON, love the magazine!”
Dwayne will be shooting in the finals to win a new Silverado pickup truck from long time Truck-Buck sponsor John Megel Chevrolet. He has already won a $1,140 Browning deer rifle and a prize package which includes Antler Addict Mineral and 4S Draw from 4S Advanced Wildlife Solutions, a safety harness from Hunter Safety System and a Shoot-Out shirt from Realtree.
