Hunt Story

Woke up to 23-degree weather and hit the snooze button. Woke back up after daylight and decided to go in. Got to stand about 8 a.m. At about 8:45 a.m. I saw a glimpse of a buck cross the creek (which could have been this one) behind me and start up the hill thru some bottomland hardwoods to my left. If it kept coming the same way I could get a shot. As it got closer I could see it was a shooter. It decided to take a left and go away from me. Started grunting to see if it would turn around and come my way. No such luck. About an hour passed, and in front of me and to the left I saw movement in some pines. Since we don't see many good-sized bucks on this property and based on the rack it looked like the one from before. It just so happened that it walked out in the same spot I had taken an antlerless buck a few weeks before about 70 yards away. Not having much luck with my scope lately, so I used iron sights to take the shot. It went down instantly. He struggled to get back up several times, and after 20 minutes or so, I got down and finished what I started. It just so happened that I had invited my dad to camp that day to cook him breakfast and hang out so waited on him. When he got there I asked if he wanted to eat or go gut a deer. You guessed it — we went to field dress and haul the deer back to camp. Needless to say we had a great breakfast and a better time talking and remembering our younger days together in the woods.
