Hunt Story

My youngest son (10 years old) and I were sitting in a box stand on the edge of a big powerline with two food plots planted on either side of us. At 7:50 a.m. a nice doe comes out and Riley makes a great 150-yard shot on her. She runs off the powerline and into the woods. I told him we would wait a while and then go check on her. At 8:10 a.m. a doe runs into the food plot, and we hear a grunt coming from the edge as a buck walks out. He says, "It's a big buck." I look at him with the binoculars and see he is a mature buck that we have several trial-camera pics of. Riley was already on him and I tell him, "Take him." He turns and says the gun will not shoot. We did not chamber another shell after he shot the doe. We chamber another shell without the deer spooking, and he gets back on him. The rifle cracks and he kinda jumps a little and locks back on the doe. I said, "Oh no you missed." The doe starts to run off and the buck follows but only makes it about 10 steps and starts to stagger and run in circles. We both say, "He's hit!" He didn't make it out of the food plot. We climb down and put our hands on the buck. We then walk to edge of the powerline where the doe he shot went in at, and she is laying just inside the wood line. Two deer including a nice mature buck in one hunt. What a morning for Riley and this very proud Dad!
