Hunt Story
Hunting Sunday afternoon during a super-moon, I went to a stand overlooking a hardwood bottom and new pine cutover with a food plot with summer sorghum. I noticed a deer early around 4:30 down in the bottom. I was able to identify him as a spike. He continued to eat under some white oak trees until a flock of 13 turkeys seemed to run him off. I watched him circle back around, and he seemed to come back to the same group of trees as the turkey flock moved up the hill. A few minutes later I looked back at the deer at the same white oak trees. With the sun shinning through the trees, the deer picked his head up, and I quickly realized what had run off the spike was not a flock of turkeys but a shooter buck by our club's trophy standards. I patiently waited for a good shot as he moved closer toward me through the trees. I picked out a open spot ahead of him, and as he passed through the opening, I placed an accurate neck shot for the harvest. Turned out to be a super day.
